About Feren OS

Feren OS is an Operating System powered by underlying Linux Technology, primarily the Linux Kernel. Its main goal is to make a cohesive user-friendly environment that anyone can use while still exposing the underlying advanced technologies available to it. Feren OS's mission also includes creating an environment where any application fits and works with the OS and works with the other applications in perfect harmony.

With a focus on a unique yet familiar desktop experience by default and a cohesive application ecosystem for most (if not all) of your needs, as well as many popular applications you might know of, Feren OS wants to provide a harmonic environment for all applications in the Linux World while also being very approachable to new users so that they can see what Linux can really do for them.

Source Code

Feren OS's Source Code, including patches and program source code, is available on Feren OS's GitHub page, with more source code being uploaded frequently for source code not yet uploaded to GitHub.

Why start Feren OS?

Feren OS was started by a young British student in 2014 as a hobby of sorts with a first release in 2015. While the initial release was an absolute failure to get installed, Feren OS saw a new release in 2016, being developed with a mindset to improve Feren OS over time, which fixed the main issues with Feren OS. Then, with time, Feren OS saw, and has seen, multiple more releases with improvements over the precedessing previews and, in the second half of 2017, snapshots for a pseudo-rolling Feren OS with improvements every single time.

Linux is the desktop platform of the future waiting to happen. With its usage in many reputable areas such as the U.S. Department of Defense and International Space Station, as well as in most supercomputers, Linux is a highly reputable and very popular kernel to use in Operating Systems in these markets. Furthermore, Linux is technically insanely popular in the mobile market due to Android being powered by an edited Linux Kernel. However, the main market that Linux currently falls flat at is the desktop market.

Linux-powered Operating Systems are often seen as an unapproachable, complicated and geek-only, which is somewhat true. Feren OS however wants to change that mindset. Linux-powered Operating Systems can be suitable for everyone, no matter the skill grade, if an effort is made to make it user-friendlier than ever before. That's why Feren OS is working to make Linux simple for new users but powerful when needed by the advanced users. Feren OS comes with the core essentials to get started, an extensive Welcome Screen and User Guide and a Store that has most of the applications you may ever want.

Furthermore, I never felt that the community gets as much control of the future of their current Operating System(s) as they should, so Feren OS is made to be designed with community contributions in mind as well.
Moreover, more recently Feren OS has also gained a part-goal of putting applications from the GTK Application Ecosystem together with applications from the Qt Application Ecosystem in a single environment, where they can all live in harmony together, with Feren OS (Plasma).

Feren OS is possible because of Canonical's Ubuntu and the Debian Operating System, as well as those who develop the applications that are used in Feren OS, including Linux Mint, GNOME and KDE.
