Release Notes for Feren OS (18.04 based)

17/7/2018

Comments

Applies to: 2018 October Snapshot (Codename: Titanium) and later snapshots (Updated)

Known Issues:

  • Cinnamon is unstable when the OS is being emulated in GNOME Boxes, and is extremely crash-happy. This does not affect VirtualBox or other common virtualisation software, nor does it affect real hardware from testing. This is an upstream issue and has been reported to https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/issues/8499.
  • The Feren OS Installer's "Install extra packages for media codecs" option currently installs the wrong codecs package (should be 'mint-meta-codecs').
  • Any bugs affecting Cinnamon 4.0 will also affect the Feren OS Experience
  • On the 32-Bit ISO, installing Multimedia Codecs via the 'Welcome to Feren OS' screen will fail due to missing dependencies. This can be fixed by skipping it, going into a Terminal, typing 'sudo reset-feren-ppas && sudo apt update', pressing ENTER, and then installing Multimedia Codecs via the Welcome Screen > Getting Started. All other ISOs are not affected by this.
  • Calamares 3.2.11 (the installer) currently has an issue where there's a high chance that if you create partitions in any way using Calamares (e.g.: Creating Partitions, formatting FAT32 partitions, etc.), installation will immediately fail during the partitioning phase on one of the partitioning operations. 32-Bit isn't affected as the 32-Bit ISO uses Ubiquity as the installer instead.

Issues from base (Linux Mint 19.1) that have been fixed:

Nothing to report here at this current time
Also check out the release notes for:
  • Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa Cinnamon Edition (Base)
  • Ubuntu 18.04 (Core Base)

Tips:

  • Garbled Screen in VirtualBox (mainly on x32 ISO): If the screen is garbled when launching Linux Mint in Virtualbox, switch to console with HOST+F1 (e.g. the Right Ctrl Key, no ALT) and back to tty7 with HOST+F7.
  • Live Session Login Details: For the Live Session, the username is 'mint' and the password should be left entirely blank, before then hitting ENTER on your keyboard.
  • Moving Windows Larger than your screen: You can hold ALT while dragging at any point of a window to move that window. Similarly holding the second mouse button down instead of the first causes the window to be resized, if allowed by the application. You can change this behaviour in System Settings > Windows > Behaviour > Moving and Resizing Windows.
  • Installing Multimedia Codecs Offline (Needs an Online Device to firstly retrieve the codecs): On the Live Session, or a installed Feren OS, go into Terminal and run 'apt download mint-meta-codecs' (no quotes). Once done, go into the folder the Terminal is currently open in (unless ran in a folder, Terminals open up in the User's Home Folder), and copy 'mint-meta-codecs.tgz' to wherever you want to keep it, and then to install the codecs offline, extract the TGZ file, open it up, and run 'install.sh', or, in a Terminal ran from that folder, run 'sudo dpkg -i *.deb'.
  • Booting with processors that might not support PAE: If your processor might not support PAE, in the 32 Bit Version, you can boot with the 'PAE Forced' option from the Live Boot Menu.
  • Booting with No Mode Set: If you are having any issues with booting Feren OS normally, and via Compatibility Mode, then choose the 'nomodeset' option from the Live Boot Menu, and then, if you install Feren OS while in 'nomodeset', next time your computer starts up, hold SHIFT on your keyboard to guarantee GRUB shows the boot menu rather than immediately picking Feren OS, press TAB on your keyboard while hovered over the 'Feren OS' or 'Ubuntu' option, and replace 'quiet splash' in the following screen with 'nomodeset', using the arrow keys to navigate around the text, like in this video (followed by pressing CTRL+X on your keyboard to boot with these new settings):
Your browser does not support the video tag.
...once you're in while booted in No Mode Set, log in, and immediately go into Driver Manager, and install the drivers that are there, and hopefully the next time you boot Feren OS up you won't need to use No Mode Set anymore.
  • Using an older Feren OS: With newer kernels, while there may be better support for a lot of hardware, regressions can also occur. If you're having issues with the 18.04-based Feren OS Releases, you can download to the 16.04-based releases from here and install them. However, some updates will be unavailable due to them being targeted solely for the 18.04-based releases of Feren OS.
