As part of my thanks to those waiting for a new Feren OS release kindly, during the Development Pausing Period, I've done some more work on Feren OS and Feren OS Lite, and am proud to announce a new ISO update to Feren OS Lite Early Access that brings a plethora of new improvements and changes to the OS. But, this is still a WIP, so don't be expecting too much change in the visual department.
Changes since last build:
  • Redone, now based on Xubuntu 18.04
  • GNOME Web is replacing Firefox as the default web browser for Feren OS Lite
  • New Feren GTK Versions
  • Pre Earlybird PPA'd
  • Panel configuration is now more reminiscent of the Zuro UI Concepts
  • New Wallpapers (non-Feren OS logo wallpapers are placeholders, however)
  • Fixed the panel launchers
  • Updated 'Feren Sources' with some visual tweaks, and *.list changes for the sources.list.d folder, and sources.list itself
  • Removed 'Feren Update' temporarily, as the OS still needs the Mint PPA for now in the form of a Cinnamon Updates PPA, as well as for XApps, and Mint Themes, and so doesn't have to be made independent from Mint's PPA being present on the system yet.
  • More
Known Issues:
  • If the Xubuntu Bootloader boots Feren OS Live automatically, into the Try/Install Feren screen, the Live Session User's XFCE configuration will either be 100% stock XFCE, or Linux Mint's XFCE Config but half-baked. To fix this, on the Live ISO/Hardware, boot manually using the 'Try Xubuntu without Installing option'
  • Inspire needs more love in the XFCE sector, this will be done in the pending Inspire icon set update.
  • Feren Dark still has the Stock Arc Dark GTK2 theme, and has colour issues with the top floating panel when applied, as well as making the bottom panel look odd.
  • No Themer yet
  • No Welcome Screen yet
  • No Dark Mode Script yet
  • The Sound Indicator ('Indicator Sound') isn't yet configured to run on startup, so out of the box the users won't have a sound tray icon for changing volume. To fix this, for every user, go into Settings Manager > Session and Startup > Application Autostart, and tick 'Indicator Sound' near the bottom of the list, and then re-login to XFCE and the sound indicator will then show itself. I'll try and get it enabled by default for all new users for the next build.
  • All Feren OS GTK2 themes, and XFWM4 themes, are not yet designed to mix in with the gradient look and feel of the new GTK Theme design, and so can either be flat-out white on the top bars (for GTK2 Apps), or can abruptly go from white on the title bars, to silver on the application itself, visually.
  • Some applications that will end up in the final product are not yet here due to PPA compatibility issues (cough Elementary OS PPA), including Photos.
